which axle for +4" chassis
Steve Bird - 23/10/02 at 09:13 PM

Hi,
I have decided to build a chassis 4" wider to give more room in the cockpit for seats etc..
I am using standard book suspension set up and want to know which rear axle and diff would be best suited?
Cortina? Capri? others?

Steve, I'm using a mk 3 cortina axle in my +4" chassis with book suspension, seems ok to me.

Yep I've used a Mk4 cortina axle in my +4" wide car, I belive the Capri axle is good too.

Cheers

looks like I will have to contact an old work mate who had a cortina axle gathering dust from an abandoned kit project.

Does anyone know what sort of diff ratio's they have, are the comparable to the escort?

Steve,

If you fancy a nightmare, I'm using Sierra Diff / shafts, fabricated upright adaptors and homemade wishbones.

Yeah I though about going down the irs route, the thing is I already have four trailing arms and 2 diff brackets ready to weld on.
The other thing is I am not sure about wishbone lengths etc.. suspension geometry is very important and I am not clever enough to work it out!!
If I had a set of plans however and I might reconsider. I am sure I can make some upright adaptors, I had a good look at a MK indy!
The drive shafts I could shorten if neccessary as I have access to a lathe.

Kettering? That's only 30 miles form me in Bedford! I'll have to come and have a gander some time.

You'll like that won't you.

My son lives in Wollaston, Northants.....not a million miles away. Possibly meet up some time when I'm over visiting?

I live in Irthlingborough. But most of my locost bits are still in Barton Seagrave clogging up my Mum's garage whilst I finish building my own garage.
