We found after fitting the trailing arms and rear axel that it seems like we may need to move e and f outward or the axle flanges will fowl with these tubes at maximum travel - Is this a common problem.

its usually tight but never seen the need too move them, is your rear axle mounted a little further forward than normal ? what length are your trailing arms ? are your trailing arms mounted further back on the axle ? (this would bring it forward)

all that said i don't see a problem in moving the bars out a little like you describe, the book is a guide not gospel.

One confirmation here, I had to move the RHS (passenger side for me) out a bit, a bit more at the top. In retrospect I think I over did it, there wasn't as much upward movement of the axle as I thought - the shocks limit it.

Doh! Clearly I need to mention I'm using the book chassis but the axle from a Corolla GTS.

You shouldn't have to modify the rear of the transmission tunnel if you're using an Escort axle, but modifications are definitely required if you have an axle off a Capri.

In a word, yes. I had to remove the right hand one. (drivers side) It was within a pube of the flange you refer to. Now positioned further back & reinforced with seat belt anchorage running between top & bottom tunnel rails.

Never having been that close to either, I'm not sure. I was refering to one of mine (Euch!). Seriously though, the arms came from, I was told, MK. Not entirly sure though as they were unsued from an abandoned project.

here are some pics - the trailing arms seem to be 295mm centre to centre - that is possibly where the difference is coming in.
From what I read there should not be a problem moving the bars - how far higher from parallel does the axle actually move?

How about just making the trailing links 1/4" longer?

I used a capri axle, and had to move the Rh one

That isn't a Mk2 Escort axle though, and that was what the book was designed for.

I can't see a problem with moving both of the 1/2" out wards.

RTFM --- it actually says in the book you may have to move them to suit the axle you are using. Not sure if that paragraph was carried over to the revised edition.

The book trailling links are a bit short making them 0.5" to 1" longer is a good idea.

UK wise, I've got the opposite!!

Passenger can be a lardy git and I've got to be skinny!

I moved the 'o' horizontal up 1 inch on the advice of Rob Lane and have never had any clearance problems (although I used Escort axle)

Evidentally that is a Mk2 axle that was brought out in South Africa - where we are.
I think we will move the two outwards about an inch or so.

turns out today that my chassis is also modified in this area - stands to reason, as its a capri axle. Downside of this is, tritons seat wont fit with this bit narrowed. Im in the process of removing the panelling, and hopefully will be able to make it fit somehow! Plus the trailing arm bolts stick into the cockpit too much, and also catch the seat.
