Steering column bracket position
Gav - 15/2/06 at 11:41 AM

Now ive got my chassis on all 4 wheels(wahoo!),
I need to make the brackets to hold the column under the scuttle, now the problem is i have no seats nor scuttle to help me judge where i need to place these.

Could some kind person(s) give me some rough measurements to fill in the rough drawing below.

I appreciate this might rely on what body work im fitting (GTS locost bosywork) but is their any good basic measurements i can work from so i can get the thing steering?

Ned

Any chance of the dimensions? I am doing my column at the moment and having big problems trying to figure it out around a Pinto exhaust and alternator

I'd still appreciate it if anyone could help with this.

I'm fitting the column at the moment, I have seats, scuttle, engine, rack and pedals and I still find it difficult to decide exactly where is the best position. I don't wish to be a killjoy but I think the relationship of the pedals, seat and steering wheel is so critical to the final product that you should perhaps consider waiting until you have all the components before making a descision on the mounts.

These have been measured by eye with a steel rule with the scuttle in situe, so please only use as a guide, they are not 100% accurate:

a=120mm height from right hand column bracket support bolt centre to top of chassis rail
b=170mm from parallel chassis side cockpit top side rail to inline vertically with centre of right hand column support bolt
c=130mm from rear of footwell top rail to inline with column bracket plate
d=240mm from front edge of footwell bulkhead to front edge of scuttle

hope this helps...

When I did mine I made up a temporary tripod mount and lightly tacked it in place. (see pic)

When it came to making the scuttle I was able to incorporate these dims into the scuttle frame.

Sorry I can't be any more help but I'm using a Nova column so the dims will differ.

bear i mind that where the scuttle sits will depend on the angle/taper of the chassis a little and also the fitment of the nose assuming you have a grp bonnet as the distances dictate where it will sit.

it will also depend on the height you want the wheel to be at and the size of the wheel used. I am using grp seats which ar quite low and its tricky rnough getting in with the small mountney wheel - you'd never be able to get in with the sierra wheel - perhaps making the bracket adjustable either slotted or with multiple height drillings would be a good idea if i were doing it again.
