cost of chassis build?
donut - 21/2/06 at 09:16 AM

Just wondering how much it has cost you to build just the chassis?

ned - 21/2/06 at 09:34 AM

more than it costs to buy one thats for sure (buying welder + tools), and about 2 years longer than it takes to pick one up from a manufacturer!

Ned.

Gav - 21/2/06 at 09:35 AM

Excluding tools about £200 for materials,
Including tools about £2000

donut - 21/2/06 at 09:35 AM

You can buy a reasonable s.i.p mig welder for around £250-300.
The car in my avatar cost around £100 in steel. If you go to a local fabricator rather than a steel stock holder, they may let you have materials for a lot less, especially if they are left over from a job and all they will do is rot on their racks.

donut - 21/2/06 at 09:54 AM

Martin, how did you design your own chassis?

To qualify what i meant:
Tubes: £120 ish
3mm 6x4 sheet: £35
2x 1.5mm 6x4 ally sheets: £80

Tools, now being a big kid(arent we all? ), ive managed to stock my garage with pretty much all the equipment ive ever wanted
Clarke 160T welder: £220
Compressor: £200ish
Compressor tools: £150
Plasma Cutter: £370
Small grinder: £15
large grinder: £35
bench grinder: £20
lathe: £300
Tap&Die set: £20
Dremmel type thing: £30
and probably a couple of hundred more for misc things that ive needed over the last 8 months.

So that just leaves a milling machine and a TIG left to go and i think im pretty well tooled up!

just hope the missus never see's this list, she still thinks im on course for £250 as per the 'book'!

Bassic chassis around £100 but all the 3mm plate and extras are adding up fast.

The chassis all in will cost around £250 but that incluedes £50 for the roll bar.

You cant add the price of your tools

But if I add gas and wire and other consuamables price would be circa £350-£400

JoelP - 21/2/06 at 10:20 AM

put it like this, second chassis is much cheaper than first! Seeing as i already have a stock of metal in, its basically free Tool cost doesnt count, as you need them anyway

i agree with what you're saying in principal Joel, but fact of the matter is that if you don't already have them you need to factor them into the budget or you won't be able to cut or assemble the steel that you've bought!

Ned.

JonBowden - 21/2/06 at 12:48 PM

I think that unless you want to build something non-standard, it will be better and cheaper to buy a chassis

Dutchman - 21/2/06 at 01:49 PM

It's a little pricy in UK for tools and goods...

anyway I got all the steel for 60euro and will have leftovers

all other tools I think I got, just MIG i boroved from pal of mine... but planing to bought 160amps MIG and the price is from 350euro to 1000e for 250 amps + the CO2 tanks whish are seconhand around 100e for 40Kg

so I can export chassis ... what is the price for powercoated bookchassis

But what if you already had them all? The only extra tools I have bought is a £15 set of drill and angle grinder, both of which I already had but thought I would have disposable ones for the build. I had a welder, compressor and even a hack saw which is what I am using to cut the tube. I did buy some new blades however!

Actually, I have bought an engine crane since buying the donor, but I had two other cars which needed engine swaps at the time so it almost paid for itself against hiring for those two jobs.

All my steel tubes were under £80, not bought the sheet yet, roll bar £10, so working out pretty locost so far

Yep --- nearer 3k for tools if like me you actually like buying exactly the right tool for every job..

Buy a chassis you know it makes sense.

NOOO! if you want to bulid one car and drive it, buy the chassis. If you plan a lifetime of abusing homemade fast cars, start building chassis now!

Gav - 21/2/06 at 04:00 PM

Amen to that Joel

Cost of stainless steel box and w/b tube £150

Less cost of shot blasting, powder coating & waxoil £150

= £0

No........ that can't be right.

Nice thinking.

To follow that logic:

Cost of steel - £80
Less cost of buying a chassis - £500

= -£420

So I still have £670 to fit within Uncle Ron's budget. That is how you do it

Avoneer - 21/2/06 at 05:24 PM

I'm up to about £400 for my chassis.

That includes a full cage by MK Engineering though.

And there's no more to add to it.

Pat...

Sorry Andy, I wasn't totally honest.

+ £5 for acid, to clean off the weld discolouration.

Steel tube £86
Plate and bits £26
Brackets free off mate
Sheet for underside out a scrap pile
Angle grinder disks £20
welding rod £11
Gas £25
total £168

I bought a cheap cut off saw that wil be used for other jobs for £50
a tig welder for £120 Both off ebay
a £20 jigsaw for plate from B&Q as the *** I lent mine to still hasn't returned it!

These are investments so not really chargeable to the chassis I suppose you could add depreciation of say £20 for wear and tear so chassis total £188 + about 50 hours. Cheepest chassis I have seen is about £280 so it paid me less than £2 per hour for all that work but I learned a lot and enjoyed it

If your building just 1 car, sod it just buy it. You won't be waiting around for ages changing your mind roughly once a week! Just make sure you buy precisely what you want or you're buggered. I made my chassis, but at 4" wider and longer i still want a little extra space. But i am 6'3", weigh 15 stone and am rather broad. Oh and having size 12 feet doesn't help either

My Welder is the most cost effective tool I have ever bought.

It owes me nothing. I have not built a chassis with it. however, the convenience of welding up brackets, the kids bikes, the wifes kitchen bits, patches on the land Rover Chassis... Its more than paid for itself.

I still cant weld neatly, however, nothing has broken yet, and thats 5 years on.

Get as Big a welder as you can afford. Try for the bottom end of the Professional ranges, as they are so much better quality than the cheapo hobby range.
Its a long term investment, especially if you are building cars and generally a handy guy in the garage.
