Hello all,
wondering if anyone knows a good place to get my rollbar chromed?
Unfortunately the only place i know off in N Ireland wont do it as "its too big"

So i'd be looking for a place i can post it to.

Called custom chrome and the guy couldnt be more helpful

And its only £110 and thats being polished aswell, in nichrome they charged me £100 for my wishbones and i had to prep them myself

i'll second custom chrome - nice people.

Just be careful if you walk in and are in a rush, they love cars and will talk to you.

(As about the V8 MG - its stunning and i think someone should produce it in real life - it was on the stand at stoneleigh)

Spent a long time talking to the owner, he'd made a superb job (although he did say that the interior wasn't finished). Could hardly drag my dad away from it

Met him in Custom Chrome. They seem almost as proud of the car as him. It is wonderful and it doesn't look out of place on the road with modern cars. Not totally convinced about the rear spoiler but thats it.

I've been told to be careful with chroming things like wishbones... the chrome can stay intact and hide a cracked wishbone/weld beneath.

In addition to James comments chrome can cause embrittlement, if you must plate suspension parts nickle is the preffered option.

You can nickle plate DIY

Also heard a lot of small chrome platers are giving up because of european legislation.

The problem is a bit nastier than that - chromium is a very brittle metal. As the base metal (steel tube) flexes slightly the chromium develops cracks, which then propogate down into the base metal (that wouldn't have cracked otherwise).

This is explained far better in one of Carroll Smith's books! The one saving grace is that we probably don't make our 'bones flex as much as one of his racing cars would do.

As stated earlier, nickel is a safer plating, or cadmium (which can be done in a gold or silver colour). Neither are as bright or corrosion-resistant as chrome unfortunately.

Another problem with chrome is that it suffers from shading i.e it does not penetrate into corners, in the V behind the top adjuster on the top wishbone for instance, and will rust I wouldn't chrome my wishbones because of the embrittlement issue, instead I would have them Chrome powder coated, have a look here http://www.aerocoat.net/chromaxtestresults.htm

are available from Frost .You could buy the ingredients seperately and try making a DIY system.

Cadmium plating produces such toxic residues that it is virually extinct in this country. As I understand it current legislation means that it is limited to military applications. The alternaive that was suggested to minimise the potential difference with steel causing galvanic corossion was nikle zinc plating but I have yet to find anyne who does this.
