442 chassis material substitutions

Ive read through the debates on material thickness and chassis stiffness and I believe the conclusion was that 16 ga 1x1 mild steel is more than adequate, I was wondering if there would be any benifit to using 1x2 tubing for the base rails?
it would increase the chassis dimentions 1" in height withought too much weight gain. Theoretically would this make the chassis stiffer/stronger in any tangible amount?

Yes, it will make the chassis stronger (or rather stiffer). But you will get about the same benefit by just rising the chassis 1”. I believe you will have a better payoff / wight by adding some triangulation. The members that are there are strong enough as it is, it's the members that are missing that weakens the chassis.
There is however another interesting effect, you will rise the the front suspension brackets by 1” without upsetting the geometry. You can use 15” wheels without increased ride hight, avoiding the SUV-look.

That is a VERY interesting point, one I had not considered before.

never considered that, but good point.

I have seen the posts and pic's as to where triangulation should be added for maximum stiffness with minimal weight gain. I'll be making use of that info as well.
