Need help, building a mcsorley book build using 1740 crossflow with twin 40 weber carburetors coupled to type 9.
with the Mk scuttle and nose cone placed on i'm struggling with bonnet clearance, easy option is to drop engine mounts which then seem as if the
n/s will obstruct starter motor, not too bothered about starter as remove refit would only be nuts and bolts job, but sump is already a good inch
below the bottom edge of the bottom rail and i'm concerned that it'll ground out and catch the gearbox bellhousing.
I think that i've an inch still to go to give clearance for the throttle linkage and carb tops , also the sidedraught trumpets are very close
but this be easy to resolve with a bonnet cut out after sva (don't think you can get away with k & n protuding from the bonnet line)
Maybe the other alternative is to raise the scuttle and nose cone by an inch but i think it might be weird looking.
If i do have to cut the sump, how much can i take out before pick up pipe problems, don't want to dry sump (too expensive)

How low is the lowest point on the bell housing ? my sump is about level with the lowest point, pick up can be altered to suit if you can get it silver soldered. May pay to fit "wings" to make up lost oil capacity
sump is at the moment about level
but i'm certain that there must be others who have overcome this issue.
If the sump is around level with the bottom of the bellhousing, then there is no point chopping the sump down. In fact it would be a bad idea to do so, having something whack the edge of the bellhousing hard is going to cause major damage, at least the relatively soft sump absorbs some impact, even if it does make it leak after.
gonna try another locosters' view point tomorrow, giving real thought to increasing scuttle and nose cone height to allow clearance for
40's.
i suppose if it looks ok it will be, but anyone who has a 1740 xf with 40's please let me know what you have done
Well I've got a 1330 Crossflow, but its a 1600 block, so it's the same height. I have a dry sump and the lowest point is the bell housing,
which I believe is the same height as the sump, which is about 3/8" below the chassis. I will use hardwood skids on the two longitudinal box
sections nearest the bell housing to take the brunt of any mishaps. However I'll still need a slight bonnet bulge to clear the Magard linkage I
have fitted to my 45s. I had considered lowering the engine, but then the bell housing fouls the chassis rails (RS2000 bell housing) and I can't
be bothered moving them.
Next engine should not be a problem as it's a 1470 in a 1300 block and I intend to make a bell housing to suit a 7&1/4 clutch with a much
smaller ring gear, so the engine can be much lower.
i'm probably already exceeding the 3/8 from the base rails.
gonna build new mounts and have a re think, wanted to retain clean bonnet line (with the exception of the k and n cut outs). Raising scuttle and nose
looks likely as it'll be straightforward to raise seat height, never even considered dry sump due to the bell housing depth, don't see the
point.
as usual, trying to keep the low in lowcost(tight scotman)
I've got a 1698cc Crossflow on dellorto's Until i found my current Westfield alloy sump I ran a chopped and welded Steel one, no problems
whilst it was fitted.
It measured 160mm from the face of the block to the lowest point, and sits the same as the westy one at 1" below the chassis rails.
