tow hitch for 7
billy - 15/5/03 at 08:12 PM

i fancy getting a small caravan to pull behind me kit. whats a good 1 to fit?

Mark Allanson - 15/5/03 at 08:30 PM

Matell to a really nice pink one, it is usually attached to the Cindy Mercedes, I have heard that toys are us have a good stock, but I am afraid that no kit version is available.

Any caravan bigger than this will give you loads of wheelspin and distorted chassis!

Best of luck,

Ken

Why anyone wants to tow a toilet around behind their car is a mystery to me.
Two replies from Cornwall dwellers........perhaps it might be due to seeing just a tad too many of the bastarding things down here.

my god cornwall home of the ginster pastie and the edan project.mmmmmmmmm oh and caravans love the place, just watch out for the low bridge on yah way down.lol

robinbastd - 15/5/03 at 09:16 PM

Do Ginsters sell their pastys in Cornwall? I thought they were for export only.
As for Eden,it's a bloody greenhouse innit?
I suppose I'll have to go there eventually
Can anyone explain how lorry drivers hit that bridge? It is flourescent yellow, there are dozens of warning signs and surely they must know how tall their truck is. Shame it isn't even lower, then it would decpitate caravans as well......

Mark Allanson - 15/5/03 at 09:24 PM

There are even height detectors both sides of the bridge and bloody great computerised signs which tell the lory driver that he is about to die, but they still go through and end up on the local news!

Bact to topic, I fancy a tow ball just to carry mountain bikes and perhaps a temporary 'boot' for those trips to Brittany - any ideas

Mark

about 20 years ago I did a tour of europe for a month towing a 10 ft caravan behind a 1100 50hp ford fiesta. Absolute pergatory. It did 38 mph in 3rd flat out!

The paris peripherique was particularly interesting......

Caravans are slow cos

1. the driver is an old git.
2. the law prohibits them from going fast.

I dont own a caravan now, so no pi$$ takes...

I saw a mini caravan thing (more like a towable solid tent really) at Stoneleigh, I think it was designed for towing behind a smart, but the same probably holds for locosts. But then if you're going that low you'd probably be better off getting a small tent.

Spyderman - 16/5/03 at 10:11 AM

I would have thought with the low weight of a Locost finding a caravan light enough to be able to pull would be a problem.

A small trailer tent would probably be more suitable if you absolutely need the capacity.

A small trailer and tent would be the optimum if you need to carry a load of stuff with you. It's not as if you are going to be taking the wife and kids is it?

Modifying the rear end to take the load from a tow hitch could be fun!

If you want to tow a caravan then use a saloon car.

I owned a 27foot caravan towed by a Mondeo Diesel..

caravans are slow because....tosspots in BMW's won't get out of middle lane when i came up behind them doing 85.

the Law prohibits every one from going fast...does it stop any of us??

I don't own a caravan now coz some low life fuckwitt (Xscuse my french)set fire to it at 3in the morning.

Metal Hippy - 16/5/03 at 04:32 PM

Gusterwotsit owns a caravan...

BWAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Metal Hippy - 16/5/03 at 04:33 PM

(Obviously I think he's lying about no longer having one...)

Marcus - 18/5/03 at 06:56 PM

Tow hitch eh.
Funny you should mention that, I've fitted one to mine. Picked it up from Beaulieu last year for a fiver!
Chassis mods, I only added another 'Z' in the back and used a 3mm plate welded to the back of the chassis to mount the thing on.
I'm NOT going to be towing a caravan, it's an accessory mounting point really for Mountain bike / Golf Clubs / Boot rack for touring.

mmmmmmmmm.lol the post was a joke.ill bear it in mind tho if i fancy causing a traffic jam.

Ian Pearson - 18/5/03 at 11:30 PM

I've fitted a detachable tow hitch to mine for all the same reasons as Marcus. I'm also toying with the idea of making a small trailer that mimics the rear end of my locost for those weekends away. Best I finish the car first.

dmottaway - 19/5/03 at 02:01 AM

Kawasaki makes a line of those 4WD motorcycle thingies with deDion rear-ends. They put a tow hitch on the deDion tube!

MikeRJ - 19/5/03 at 07:33 AM

I have a tow bar complete with tow ball that came off a mini if anyone wants it. Free, gratis and for nothing. Would be glad to get rid of it. Not too keen on posting it though so would be better for anyone reasonably close to Plymouth.

gotta agree here:
I'm only 32 and borrow the ol'mans van a couple of times a year, it aint me going slow, its the git in the skoda labia or whatever that you can't see in front of me!!

Spyderman - 3/6/03 at 05:39 PM

You still searching for a caravan to tow?

How about this one. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2417757868&category=424

macbrew - 3/6/03 at 07:43 PM

I think the law states that you cannot tow a caravan greater than the weight of your car and this is for experienced towers (old gits max 30mph).

Rule of thumb is no more than 80%

Doubt if you would find a caravan light enough or even a trailer tent.

Being tossed about by a wind swept out of control mobile bog is not what I am building my car for.

Sorry to be so serious but I can't better some of the previuos comments (can't spell eeetheeer).

elewayne - 4/6/03 at 01:50 AM

All kidding aside. I think there is a link on the Lotus 7 links site (real Lotus) for a guy who turned that little trunk thing into a small pickup bed. That might work better for you.

Rob Lane - 4/6/03 at 08:57 AM

Fitting a tow hitch is probably very easy but its use should be confined to a 4 foot open trailer or other lightweight objects.

The law changed about 3 years ago regarding tow gross weights and vehicle weights. They also changed the driving licence status regarding towing weights.

I can't be definitive about this but i think any towed item could not be more than the towing vehicle weight unless braked and then not above the design towing load.
Just how you would come to the towing design figure on a Locost has me puzzled.

I do know however that the cops are well up on this and have been pulling towing drivers on Sundays around here just to check that very thing.
The Ministry checkpoints at Hull and Newark in particular have been pulling towing drivers and some horse trailers.

johnston - 4/6/03 at 10:31 AM

the talk i heard from the rally fraternity was if your were towing a car on a trailer the towing vechile had 2 b 4wd or a twin wheel van

gjn200 - 6/6/03 at 07:00 PM

Towbars need to have some european cert now, as does the car, The mgf for example is'nt allowed a towbar at all.

andyps - 6/6/03 at 07:21 PM

As far as I know there was a date after which all tow bars had to be EC certified, and aproved for the car they are fitted to.

Who would know when it had been fitted though? I am sure if the car is not new there wouldn't be too much problem - I had also been considering something detachable for carrying bikes etc for my planned build.
