can someone please clarify how i get a vin no. i thought i could invent one but phoned dvla to check and they said i had to take all paperwork to my local office, is this correct???
Invent your own and do a free vin check on the internet. DVLA pretty useless.
Provide it at sva for the paperwork and then take your paperwork to your local vro office.
They will not bat an eyelid if you tell them you rang the DVLA at swansea to check it.
All the sva will ask if you have cleared the number before putting it on your cert.
Speak/write to the local DVLA office where you will go to register your car. Some will let you make up your own, others insist on allocating one. I wrote nicely proposing my number and they OKd it (Maidstone VLO)
I rang mine, they checked the system and said mine did not exist.
Seems that nothing ever gets written down because you have to explain it all again when you turn up.
Some of these vro staff just do not care. They can allocate any vin if they feel like it, but they are less likely to say anything if your sva cert
already shows a vin.
Went to get mine checked out this morning refused to let me use old luego one and would not let me make it up and said they had to issue it and only when the car was inspected which means it has to be inspected before I can apply for my sva

Where do i go to check it on the internet and if they have already said no am I stuck as they have already stated inspection first which can be done in two weeks if I take it to them though.
Just do a search on google for vin check.
If you are worried, then take your car to a different vro.
Am I right in thinking then that your car needs to be finished before you can have a VIN allocated.
I rang Footman James today to insure my kit as I build it against fire and theft and they wouldn't insure it untill I had given them the cars
chassis number.
