hello, does any ony know a formula for working out a spring rate for a coilover in a vertical position

Have a look at THIS thread.

Stand on the spring, measure how much it compresses, rate = lbs(kg) / in(cm)

Being a "coil-over" spring has nothing to do with it, however, when you measure it, take the spring off the shock, else the stiction will give a wrong value.

sorry lads my question is not clear,i know how to measure the value of a spring what i want to work out is what spring weight to give the correct ride using say the weight of the car etc.

All sorts of variables in play there.....

FWIW I am aiming for a 1:1 motion ratio on my coilovers with the spring rate equal to the corner weight.

On my BEC I am guessing....

500lbs on Front 'Axle' (All up w/driver) - 250lb springs.

Define "correct". Therein lies the problem; it's a personal decision. If you want a *general* guideline, make the wheel rate 1/2 the unsprung weight.
