i have no where to store full lenghts of steel, so i will have to cut all the sections roughly to length then square off the ends after wards. i need toknow if any of the sections in the book are too short.

I didn't use the book for the chassis, but I can confirm that J B McSorleys's plans are dead on - so no worries

Make sure you get the angles right on M1 & M2, I misread the plans and cut them to 50 instead of 40 degrees - my only problem

So far I have found pieces C,Q,P,J1 and J2 to be wrong.

C, Q and P are too short in both Book and McSorley. J1 and J2 are too long in Book but correct in Mc Sorley.

looking at your chassis -

I made my top and bottom 'planes' before putting in verticals, but perhaps thats a personal thing. That way you can build both 'planes' on the base board rather than building off the verticals which may introduce errors.

Have you put your engine rails in a tad too soon?


DONT cut your steel in one go. That way the little errors here and there will be apparent before you get to a situation where summat is 10mm too short.

Use the book / Mcsorley as a guide, cut your steel to lenghth + a tolerance, (say 30mm). You will end up spending time cutting twice but you should save too much waste. At the end of the day though the cost of the chassis raw material is probably relatively cheap. I paid about £6 / 6m length of 25mm RHS.
