Chassis Clearance (gearbox)

Can anyone tell me if this is enough clearance between the end of the gearbox and the chassis to allow for sideways movement? Its maybe not clear from the pic but the end of the box is in between the 2 upight sections. Its a book built chassis and type 9 box.

Looks a bit on the tight side. All depends what engine and gearbox mounts you use. If you use nice stiff ones (ooerr) you might get away with it...

It looks reasonable - if your gearbox mounting is fairly stiff.

Doesnt the westy mount need modification or mods to the std sierra chassis mounts?

Fixed your tag for you (Thanks what had i done wrong as its my first time doing it that way?) Its a standard sierra gearbox mount but the crossflow engine has luego type mount with cortina/landrover rubbers. If you dont see a pic i will try and post one later (SWMBO beckons)

I fitted the centre bit out of a standard sierra mount, but it proved to be OK when the correct bell-shaped washer is used - it limits the movement.

I fitted a big washer inside the bell washer under the bolt head and it tightens things up nicely.

With the type 9 I used an Escort mount narrowed by about 10mm to fit the tunnel. I've the same clearance as yours and similar engine mounts and have had no problems.

Thanks. I will stiffen up the gearbox mount. That part of the chassis is still tack welded so will weld it up now.

what about this for stiffness??

from RallyDesign, they say its only recommended for racing purposes...

They ment
It will be noticed that there will be more vibrations in the car.

But as you're sitting in the wind and probably the rest is vibrating in the car you won't notice.
