Shall I build another one?
lsdweb - 31/7/07 at 11:11 PM

Hi All

I've got a spare, almost finished chassis sitting in a mate's attic and I'm sorely tempted to build another '7'. I'd like to do some touring anbd maybe some of the foreign events so a CEC is the only option (I'll keep the BEC single seater).

Spec possibly:

Baby Zetec? Just fancy it! ALternative - Zetec - been there done it.
Megasquirt - have to try it!
De Dion
Full trim and screen.
13" wheels.

I don't want an out and out racer (got one) so this seems pretty sensible.
No real budget but just spend what I've got when I've got it!

Should I go for it?

Wyn

Well of course, what else would you expect us to say

Do you mean Zetec-SE by baby zetec? I'm sure you know it doesn't bolt directly onto a type-9 so gets expensive with the bellhousing - they also command a premium compared to a regular Zetec. Nice and light (for a cec) though.

Wouldn't bother with trim personally, but if that's what floats your boat

Yeah - Zetec SE - I saw one in a Fisher a couple of months ago and it looked perfect - really compact and light. I did't realise it won't bolt up to a Type 9 / MT75 easily - I need to do some research!

Of course you should build again!

That's the beauty of this hobby/passion, you can work to your own timetable and preferences. And anyway it's better than pi55ing the money away down the pub.

Build it.

Shawspeed supply a bellhousing etc. for the Zetec SE to type 9.

As another option to throw into the pot and a similar option the the Zetec SE, have you considered a Toyota 4-age?? There's plenty of people with them and a lovely light, compact, revvy engine. RAW Engineering are the guys to talk to - I was really impressed when i drove one of their cars and that was just the basic 16v - there's options for 20v and supercharged versions also.

Worth a look IMHO

The SE Zetec looks a pretty expensive route, although it's pretty s*xy!

The 2 litre Zetec is easily done and I've been there before. To save money, I could use the Emerald ECU from the single seater (used 10 times a year!) and just swap it back and fore - I'd only need to buy another ECU plug! I have a decent map for the Zetec as well so that would be a sensible option.

The 4AGE is a good looking motor though and nice and revvy!

I've just mailed my mate to say dig the chassis out.....

I'll get somebody local (MVS) to do the final chasis fabrication (need some changes for the De Dion) as my welding's not that good, although I can do the non structural stuff - brackets etc.

I feel quite enthusiastic now - I suppose I'd better tell the wife :-(

If there is time, you have no other choise

It would be almost rude not to build one seeing as the chassis is in somebody else's garage!
