Floor Alu
madrallysport - 21/8/07 at 11:59 AM

Sorry in advance, i asked a few weeks ago about alu for the car, i was told 0.9mm for inside and 1.6mm for the floor, i called with my local coach works and all they have is 1.5mm and 1.2mm is the thinist they have, the 1.5mm will be fine but if i use the 1.2mm will it add much weight?, also what if i use the 1.2mm for everything will that do for the floor, sorry to keep asking all these silly question, i'm very new to this.

I wouldn't worry about the additional weight of 1.2mm side panels over 0.9, unless you are really trying to save every gramme on an ultimate car.

1.2mm is rather thin for the floor IMO, but I think NS Dev used it and should be able to tell you how it's holding up now he's on the road (think maybe Westfield or Caterham also use it but I've not checked).

Remember it needs to be half hard as soft ally at those thicknesses will last 10mins before denting.

Hi there,

On that Post I replied with that I had used 2mm for the floor and 0.9mm for the interior and side panels.

I wanted to build a relatively lightweight car, but even so I think it was fine using 2mm for the floor and obviously benefit from the additional stiffness.
