lloyd57 - 18/6/02 at 03:12 PM

Does anyone know a source of oval steel Tube?
Loads of Racing people use it so must be available somewhere?

Liam - 18/6/02 at 03:46 PM

Hi

I got mine from good old MK. Think it was about £3 per metre. The people he gets it from dont cover it in oil, so it gets rusty - oh well.

most steel stock holders will have a supply, where do you live ? i do have some off cuts in garage, not sure if they will be long enough for bottom wishbone though as lots a builders have sifted thru what i have......North Derbyshire here....

Jon Ison - 30/6/02 at 05:34 PM

bass - 3/7/02 at 08:34 PM

brought some oval tube 1 1/4 x 5/8 x1.6 at £5 .88 for7.5m, 40 x20 x1.6 £6.90 for 7.5 m, 1" box £8.90 for 7.5 m is that a fair price?

interestedparty - 3/7/02 at 09:28 PM

Depends on the quality of the shopping experience

Steel prices seem to vary a lot, perhaps by supplier or by how much you buy.

Originally i bought 10 x 6 mtr lengths of 1 inch section for sixty quid.

A year later i bought two and they cost just over 20!

If you are wondering why i needed more than a std locost, its cos mine isnt.

They look nice
I remember that stuff now (been out of England nearly 8 years) we used call it FSO, for "flat sided oval". In some applications (like wishbones) it looks great and is worth a few extra bob. ISTR that Le Bas were the main suppliers of it.

john_s - 7/7/02 at 08:08 PM

Very nice... think i'll have to have a look for some tube like that.

John

Jasper - 9/7/02 at 01:25 PM

Bass, where did you get your oval tube from? I've tried all my local suppliers, and they've all put me onto Hub Le Bas who only sell large quantities.

MK don't post it

Jon Ison - 9/7/02 at 06:41 PM

Hi guys, we have had some in the past at work, sourced from a stockholder in sheffield, will get info n post....

Jasper - 9/7/02 at 07:34 PM

Cheers Jon, again!

Jon Ison - 10/7/02 at 04:33 PM

sorry guys clean forgot, tomorrow do ?

Jon Ison - 11/7/02 at 05:03 PM

more excuse's, but i'm off to bed.....

Jon Ison - 12/7/02 at 05:33 PM

Right......got it..... they supply two types in lots of different size's / wall thickness,

"Flat sided oval" bit like RHS but with rounded sides instead of square corners.

"Elliptical Oval" nice stuff this, true oval shape this one.......

Not sure how much you would need to buy B4 they would ship and if it really gets tuff and they won't post i can get some in and post it from work...(ask Jasper) it costs me £6 to post packages 24hrs so that is an option if enough people want it, i'm not trying to make money here just help out so as long as i aint out of pocket if all else fails we can do it that way.

Oh, the number Gardener Steels 0114 2442094.

Cheffy - 15/10/02 at 01:06 PM

Just phoned MK to enquire about flat sided oval for front wishbones and was quoted £10 per metre. Is it just me or does that sound a tad expensive!!!

Cheers,

Cheffy.

interestedparty - 15/10/02 at 03:09 PM

I think if you wanted lots then it would be expensive, but then you would be buying it from a steel stockholder then, wouldn't you?

It sounds to me as if MK are setting a price which has more to do with the hassle of supplying people with small amounts of the materials they use in their own business. When I used to repair guitars sometimes people would ask to buy fretwire, and I always quoted a discouragingly high price so as not to have to measure out small amounts of materials, cut them etc etc, so their price sounds reasonable to me

John

Liam - 15/10/02 at 03:36 PM

Well I wouldn't say a tenner a metre is very reasonable considering MK sold me some about six months ago for £3 a metre. He even cut it up for me into metre lengths so we could fit it in my mates Locost. I know I'm special, and I was also buying poly bushes and bush tubes, and I went to pick it all up, but back then he was just passing on the oval tube for about what he paid for it.

Seems now that maybe he's getting a fair bit of demand for his oval tube and decided he could make a few bucks supplying it. Nothing wrong with that, but at that price I reckon surely you would be better off going to a local stockholders, even if you have to buy a bit more than you need.

Cheffy - 15/10/02 at 03:51 PM

Hi Liam,

Have been phoning round this afternoon and only found two stockholders who do it so far. One had a minimum order value of £80 and the other was £100. Tried Gardener Steels (mentioned earlier in this forum) and they don't do it anymore. Anyone got any idea's?

Thanks,

Cheffy.

Buy £80 worth and sell it to the rest of us?
I'd buy some for the right price!

Cheers,

James

Cheffy - 15/10/02 at 04:26 PM

Yeah, that thought had occured to me. If no one knows where we can get small amounts I'll phone them back and find out the exact price. If the price is right would anyone else be interested? I'm in Oxfordshire. Anyone wanting some could either pick it up from me or I'd be happy to look into sending it via courier if it's feasible.

Cheers,

Cheffy.

theconrodkid - 15/10/02 at 04:44 PM

ill have some

Cheffy - 15/10/02 at 05:02 PM

I'll check it out tomorrow and post the price. Once we know what we're looking at I can find out exactly who wants what. Once there's enough of us I'll get it ordered.

Cheers,

Cheffy

Cheffy - 16/10/02 at 02:16 PM

Bingo!!! Just ordered 5x6 metre lengths of 30x15x1.5mm flat sided oval. Should be here middle of next week. £13 a length. Anybody interested e-mail me at martin@frost21.freeserve.co.uk or tel. 07720 578548.
