The body work I envisage will need some structural support underneath, and I think I'm going to use this to also add regidity to the frame.

Can't you integrate the strength into the fibreglass body? with ribs? fibreglass is tough old stuff
Yeah.
A technique ive seen used else where is to lay 20mm polyprop rope against the shell, and then glass over that to create a rib.
- Im sure there lighter things to use the polyprop (ie foam) but its very handy, and proberbly lighter than steel.
