I’m a newbie if no one has seen my first post in the engine section and have now decided on a 1600cc X Flow I think!.. I would love to build my chassis my self but as its my first may buy so I have a bit of confidence in the car. Where is not necessarily the cheapest but the best place to get a chassis which will home this engine?

I've built my own chassis (well nearly finished anyway) but the general consensus of opinion appears to be that the MK Engineering chassis are the best made.

for the price list and pictures but it appears to be £400 for an Escort chassis.

May well be as i live in weymouth which is almost as south of dorset as you get right on the seas edge!

What other companys are there are they any cop?

I can build you a chassis for £265, but it wont be painted.

I have found a company called Racetech Ltd ( http://www.racetech.ee/ ) in Estonia that makes something called ESTfield. It's based on the Locost but they don't say what's changed. They charge ?920 for the chassis (?1030 if you want it powder coated). Since I can easily take the ferry to Estonia from Stockholm the transport should be no problem.

A few years ago the founders of Racetech used to post on the Locost list - their work looks very respectable.

Originally they were standard locosts, apart from minor changes to fit Lada parts in. They may have moved on, but they are probably worth a visit.

I was responding to liftarn's posting...

I've seen work by MK, Stuart Turner and Luego and they all seem to make nice chassis. My only reservation with ST is that they can be off-hand (i.e. rude) - I'm not the only one to experience that.

Also Merlin on this list makes chassis, so it may be worth talking to him. I have no idea of the quality of his work, but other list members speak well of him.

Thanks. Didnt mean it off ishly. I may try to build one and if goes all horibbly wrong then buy so i now just need to decide on engine!

No worries!

Try building your chassis - if you take time to practice before you start, prove that you can make decent welds and THEN start on the chassis, you should have few problems.

The main thing is to be very critical of your own work - if you think a weld looks iffy then grind it away and do it again. I did this to a number of welds on my chassis.

If you can get hold of a skilled welder to get you going, so much the better. Nice if he can cast an eye over your work at some time as well.

Thanks for the advertisement David, if anyone is interrested in the finished results my car will be at the Uxbridge show (and so will my order book!) this Sunday (21st July).

There are also some photos in the archive of the first chassis - gives you some idea. Difference with us is that we build it how YOU want it, not necessarily 'buy the book'.

Gremlin, try avin a go yourself. I opted for self built, bought a Mig, practiced a bit, got a local engineering co. who supplied my weld gas to show me how to weld a bit, and then got busy. Gotta go back and grind a few dodgy welds out, but on the whole I'm really pleased with the result, and it really satisfying.

Don't forget, if you dfon't wanna weld your gonna have to buy all the suspension components as well which will increase the costs a lot.

Save the cash, and spend it on a bike engine for your car, MUCH better idea!!!!

not strictly locost but does anyone know wether Martin Keenan is going to offer the chassis for his new mid engined car seperatly?? man he's a hard guy to track down
