steel in and around york - can't find anything other than commercial suppliers
paul the 6th - 24/7/08 at 10:00 AM

just wondering where everyone in the york/north yorkshire area gets their steel from?

I've found a few websites through google but they're either massive commercial suppliers selling 100x100 box as their smallest offering, or they don't have any info whatsoever - just a contact number.

Also, is the price on steel section worked out by weight or length? I'm after a couple of metres of 16swg box section (about 25x25) to get some practice done before I start on the roadster chassis.

Could anyone recommend a decent supplier and maybe give me an idea of prices plz?

thanks in advance!

You might find a local fabrication company with some off cuts for practicing. They may also be able to source what you need for the chasis too.

I made friends with a small company near me and they've been really useful for the odd bit of steel and some welding tasks. If you explain what you're doing it usually sparks a bit of interest

Not many people use steel as thin as we do, as they tend not to be so concerned with weight.

I use
http://www.parkersteel.co.uk
who have a huge range of stuff and deliver it. You will find erw tube (which is what we want mostly) in the tubes and pipes section of the black carbon steels.

Except for parker steels (link above) who have an excellent web site where you can get lots of different types and sizes of steel, plus the prices, and usually delivery the next day.

In my case £50 plus vat. Having had a look at the Metals4U website I shall be ordering from them in future!

I'm not too peeved though as my Parker's order includes a couple of beams for the chassis jig I am constructing, amd the other people don't do those.

Get down to rufforth first saturday of very month - there's always a couple of metal stalls on with various sizes and you can generally order stuff if they don't have what you want.

If you just want some bits for practicing on, it'll fit the bill perfectly. Just you'll have to wait another week before you can get it.

paul the 6th - 24/7/08 at 08:07 PM

just had a quick look at google maps - didn't realise there was something on at rufforth? where abouts is it like, just off the main road or signposted etc?

Guessing it's some kind of market based occurence for the local agricultural based lot? il try get down this next saturday to have a look

definitely impressed by the look of metals4u too

Its Barrett Precision Tubes at elvington, its on the airfield industrial estate, they have a pile of seconds which i often go for a rummage through, theyre usually a 6m length with a kink in for about a fiver if youve got cash ;-) They can get what ever you want in, but i always just use the seconds pile. Theres also wilsdens steels on the other side of the road if you need any black steel. HTH, Andrew.

andrew-theasby - 25/7/08 at 10:55 PM

Forgot to say, there only open monday to friday. Probably best just to pop down with a few pound notes in your pocket.
