painting options

what options are there for painting the chassis, and what are the pros and cons? so far I've thought about using a brush and hammerite, spray priming it and spraying the finish coat, or powder coating. Can the chassis be galvanised?

Personally I like powder coating but you need to make sure that you don't need to make any alterations or add any brackets before you have it done.

Galvanising can be done but you risk distorting the chassis.

Hammerite chips easily.

You pays your money and makes your choice

In an ideal world, shot blast, acid etch, 2K single coat in your colour of choice.

Hammerite is only for painting brushed rusty steel, has no self etching properties at all, hence the easy chipping.

Guess what chassis black is used for? Using a gloss roller you can cover a whole chassis in no time.

whatever you do - please dont use Hammerite!! It is brittle and so will chip - in my experience its completely crap paint. Far better with POR-15, powdercoat or 2k.

It's not crap at all, it just needs to be used in the right situation, as Mark pointed out above

I'll give you that one - so only to be used on a chassis made from brushed rusty steel then!!

Otherwise use an alternative that isnt so susceptible to chipping from good steel

See if your local paint supplier has tekaloid which is a commercial vehicle synthetic paint, very tough and brush/rollable. If not use standard synthetic (even this is getting scarce!)

I read what they said but they seemed to be talking about rusty but cleaned steel.

The issue really is, not which paint is tougher than the others, but which grips the smooth, even shiny new steel the best.

A Bit OTT for a locost with clean metal. Ok for that model T found in someones pond, or the morris minor sitting on the corner for years with the for sale sign in it.

Personally, a good clean with some thinners and a cloth, then a couple of nice even coats of enamel paint should do it. As good as any powdercoat, especially as 90% of us will add a bracket or drill it shortly after completion.

What ever coating you decide to use. The end result will be relative to the preparation you do.

I would shot or sand blast the chassis first.
This will give the coating something to key onto.
Its the only way to get a good finish.

Good prep work will give you a good finish what ever you use.

If its worth doing do it properly. Especially if it covers those hard to get at places after the car has been built.
