I have been looking on ebay for parts for my future build and very often i find chassis from unfinished projects.
My question is:
Would you trust getting a chassis from an unfinished project?
How can someone check if the chassis is actually Ok for such a build? Is there an easy way of checking it?
Am I thick to have such a concern?
personally i wouldn;t touch one,
but if your going to, remember one thing
a good weld never looks cr*p!!!!

Are you talking of a manufacturer's built chassis or a home made one??
Yes, i understand what you are saying. You can always tell if welding is good or not even though, i haven't weld for ages, i know how it looks
like.
I am concerned about the distortion etc.
Obviously home made ones

that wasn't what he said.
a good weld will never look crap.
a crap weld however can look good.......

ETA : it's not so hard to check if a chassis overall is square. measure diagonals and if it's miles out, walk away. the suspension brackets
are more of a concern and may be worth cutting off and rejigging your own if you think they're suspect.
take a 6 foot spirit level with you and see what the major rails look like otherwise. any major warping and again, walk.

Stupid thought!
Could distortion on a chassis be concidered as a good welding? Otherwise if it is a crap weld, you wouldn't have good penetration hence no
distortion!
Dont do it...
I bought one i thought looked good over ebay.
Got it back and on the table and was not square, crap welding and dimensions all over the place. Only do it if you can go and look at it first.
Just think, why would they get to just the chassis stage with nothing else? mabye they messed it up and want rid of it?
I am not doint it. I am just wondering.
The only reason i might go for one is only if the price is really low and if i would then get it, it would be to salvage the metal.
So far, i have been quoted nearly 180 quid to get 48m of steel 25X25X1.6mm
