Has anyone on here fitted a K series engine in a mini and if so what subframe did you use and what were the main problems... (I'm sure there will
be many!)
I've a complete engine and box including subframe and all ancilliaries from an MGF waiting to go into a neighbours 1979 mini.. what have I let
myself in for now???

There are two main paths for frames when fitting these engines to minis, the metro frame or the modified mini frame. There are advantages and
disadvantages to both of these and you need to think carefully before choosing which route to take. Firstly choose you final engine/gearbox
combination as this can determine which frame you use. Generally using the R65 gearbox allows you to use a modified mini frame and the PG1 require use
of the metro frame as it is larger.

Im going to be fitting a CG13DE engine out of a K11 nissan micra into my mini. I will be modifying my existing subframe to make it fit.
I think that the metro subframe is slightly longer than the mini subframe? Ive never had a good look at a mini fitted with a metro subframe/ K series
engine to know what implications this leads to at the front, if you have to mod the front panel, or if you can trim/modify the front of the the
subframe to bring the size back down again
Modifying a subframe strictly means the car should have an IVA test doesn't it?
No because it isnt part of the the Monocoque of the car.
There is a lot of chat about this on TheMiniForums.co.uk There is a thread on there where one of the members asked a Vosa inspector about what they
can/cant do without having to IVA. If you modify the bulkhead like required with some engine installs, then that should be IVA'd, but if it is
just a subframe mod to fit a new engine, then it shouldnt need one

That's interesting, what if you mod the baulkhead to fit Webbers? Would you need to IVA as the shell has been altered I wonder?!

OK slightly off topic but reading the above suggests that fitting four link boxes or large tunnels or possibly just a set of arches to an escort for
example would require an iva???
I read a story where a local guy did a roof chop on a car and vosa took away the v5 till he had it iva,d
surely that would also mean that cars like bike engined minis would need an iva.
so do all modified cars need an iva or is it just significantly modified and who draws the line?

One of my best chums has been doing this for about a year now, inbetween university study.
He bought a complete new subframe made out of 1" box section which he has fitted his k series into.
He also has a +100mm front end going on but on trial fitting, it looks as though he might not need the +100mm now.
Its a big job but will be well worth it when its running.
Let me know and i will put you onto him - he has a build diary on one of the forums, just cant remember what one off top of my head.
Worth adding that his car is majorly altered throughout, tubbed inner arches, loads of steel removed wherever possible, full cage, rear beam instead
of subframe, coil overs, roof cut out and replaced with fibreglass to save a tad more weight etc !!

i think some users get a bit exited about iva or not iva? if you go by the letter
surely a pair of sills on a mini or escort or chopping the flitch panels as in previous pics
means an iva. what utter crap .imao. just to get you going, why spoil a mini by fitting a k series?

This one is going through an IVA because my friend wants to make sure it is fully legal etc, so i would assume that if it passes an IVA it should all
be ok.
I didnt want to go on about IVA etc as this topic was originally just asking if anyone was doing it or had any info on it.
Would a standard mini pass an IVA bearing in mind all the exposed seams and gutters?
At least the standard Mini was structurally sound.
