Engine building?

I know this is a funnie one but has anyone on here actually made their own engine, by that i mean machine out all the parts bolt them all together and get it started?
I heard of someone that made a small V8 as a sort of hobby and it came out alright and sounded remarkably awsome although I don't think it's worth it and wont be near as reliable as a mass produced one but still think it's quite interesting!

I saw a programme on discovery or men and motors, where a bloke built a 1/4 scale ferrari testarossa, complete with a self built V12, think he was a retired engineer, sounded awesome.

the program you refer to was a series presented by clarkson, but i dont remember its name.

I would suspect that building an engine would be a massive task - it might help if you used parts from other existing engines - such as pistons, crank and valves. I would think that these would need to be of rather special grades of metal, and would be a specialist machining job.



there have been pics posted before of a twin bike engine V8 - now that would be nice - a 2 litre eight

I think I've seen them before too it's like two bike engines moulded together .
now that's wot talkin bout
would it be possible you think too use 2 cylinder heads from a bike engine(s) then make up your own block and crank.
sounds posible enough even for the basic engineers we are

especially if you just modified an existing crank.

It would take forever to make an entire engine from scratch, and you probably end up with a sh!tter anyway! But then, rome wasnt built in a day...

John Britten the bike bloke pretty much made and engine from scratch, I watched the video recently, its pretty good, but very thin on detail.

There are a few sites about, showing scratch built engines, one was a small V8, designed and built by a Forumla Student team. Another was I guess more of a model V8, it had the engine on a stand being run up by the builder, was very cool, pretty sure I found the link on here.

It was a 1/3rd scale 312PB with 12 cylinder boxster engine.

Ian Drysdale here in Oz produces V8 750cc and 1000cc engines based on Yamaha pistons, rods, heads and gears etc. The block is his design.

What kinda power/torque are they making ? How reliable etc. and most important - how much, in Aus $ ?

TVR speed 12 was a fabricated engine , dont think it was very relaible tho .

For my final year college project I built a model 20cc Wankel engine from scratch and that was a mother of a task I would certainly not relish the idea of building a full size engine from sctatch.

Ive seen and heard it running about 10 years ago.

Model Engineer Exhibition at Olympia around Christmas time. Good day out, when I was a full on model aero greek I used to love it The guy that made the car is a member of 'The Exquisite Model Makers Association' ...or something like that world wide thing. He starts it up and runs and revs it a few times, until a MASSIVE crowd gathers then shuts it off, does it about 3 times during the day lots of other cool models there, all are phenomenally detailed and re truly works of art. Lots of static displays of model engines, that do run but not at the show IIRC, well not that I saw.

Here's a SAE V8 project.
A customer of mine actually makes working miniature scale V8 engines (not sure what scale, but they'd fit in a shoe box), but I can't find his web site. I'll see if I can find it.

Yep it's decided I want to hav a go at that!
Mabey when I retire and have finnished the locost I'm gonna have a go at it myself.
Looks a big take on but It'll be worth it so you can say "yeah I made an engine too".
