Wiring Pinto 1800
masmithuk - 6/9/02 at 08:14 AM

Okay, I give in. I am rebuilding a Formula 27 which has been fitted with 1800 Pinto plus twin DCOE Webbers. There is no engine wiring. I am trying to use a new RobinHood loom and struggling to knit everything together. Do I need the amp? (I havn't got one), the dizzy has a single cable hanging out of it andthe cards do not have the cable pickuo that an amp would look for. Any guidance greatly received.

Ta, Mark

did you get the big wall chart with yer loom. you will need the amp. once you get that it will become easier. make sure to chop about a foot of wiring when you get amp.

Also a silly question but but has the dizzy got points fitted? If there is just one wire coming out of it, it could be 'clockwork', and you wont need an amp.

good point. its gunna be electronic though deffo.

Did'nt the 1800 OHC use one of the ESC type ECU's ?. AFAIK the standard dizzy has advance mechanism fitted as the ECU performed that function, it was a basic attempt at Mapped ignition. The ECU was a bally great big thing with a vacuum connection on it, the dizzy is quite a short one with no advance capsule

B@tman is exactly right. Get an ESC IV module for about £5 from a scrapyard or a standard 2.0 dizzy.

i meant ESC II

dont want all tha ecu milarkey, just use a standard electronic dizzy

You might get away with Using a early Sierra 2L dizzy, with 5 pin Ignition amp and matching coil. The Advance curve of the 2L may not be quite what your 1800 wants but you can always mess about with the bob weights and springs. If you plan to mod the motor the standard advance curve would probably be wrong anyway

jus a follow up : My Rickman Shed is fitted with a 1800 pinto and seems to have a Bosch 2L dizzy,5 pin igntion pack and a weber 32/36 DGAV carb, I don't what it runs like as I can't get it started ! but apparently it did work 3 years ago.
