Hi All,

I have the Mondeo gearbox in my striker and for the trackdays I'll be doing in the car this year, what would be the best gearbox oil to use for trackdays ?

I doubt it Buddy - Mondeos are FWD.

probably a mondeo engine gearboc will be a type nine or MT75

It is a 5 speed with the reverse up the top left where you have to push down to get into reverse.

Is there a way of finding out what gearbox it is ?

Back to OP: after doing some reading ages a go it basically ended up being to try and use what ever is currently in there. if you don't know what's in there then pick one!

I put GL4 sw75 something or other.

Somebody with more experience will be along shortly to give their 2p worth.

Its a 2L Mondeo zetec engine rebored to 2.1.

I bought the car last May looking abit scrappy and done afew things to it since but never the gearbox oil. Its one of the last things to do ready for the new season.

Left and push (next to 1st) is Type 9, MT75 is opposite 5th (next to 4th).

Correct grade for a type 9 is 75w/90 GL4 semi synthetic. Don't use GL5 or fully synthetic, the change will be rubbish and the syncros will not last long. I use a Comma gear oil of the above grade, suits the type 9 fine. Don't listen to anyone that says use auto transmission fluid, thats for an MT75 and it will wreck the type 9 box.

Next problem you will have is getting the old oil out, no drain plug. You will have to suck it out via the lid. When you take the lid off DO NOT MOVE THE GEAR LEVER, if you do the selector mechanism will get confused (2 gears at once) and its a box out job to sort, done it for one mate (ex-mate) twice now, some people never learn.

As said above it's a Type 9 box (with 1st top left) and the oil spec is as Paul says above.

Doubt very much though that you'll get the oil out of it in situ - it is possible as described above IF you have the clearance to get the lid off or you can get at the filler hole and suck it out - both via a pump as mentioned.
But
It'll be a bu66er to do and I wouldn't bother, if it's working well then leave well alone - just top the level up if required (that can be a right PITA to do too - unless you're very lucky and somebody has drilled 'the hole' in the side of the passenger footwell..)

Doing this job on mine requires the assistance of the missus as her hands are small enough to get a stump of allen key and ratchet spanner on the filler hole screw - cost's me a fortune in shopping each time!

BTW one very worthwhile mod to this box is a quaife gearlver kit and uprated saddle clip (Burton) makes a tremendous difference to the change, goes from pudding stirring to bolt action..
