front end angles: why?

Hi to all,
(silly newby question...)
Looking at the bookchassis pdf page 3:
Why is the front end tilted rearward this way?
(seen from the side the upper rail layout is shorter than the bottom)
Is there any structural reason for this?
As welding this angled part might be tricky for me,
Is it possible to make the front end square/flush?
In this case I will probably need to recalculate the proper locations for the upper Aarm braces?
Thanks for ideas,
Hiro

I believe it is to allow the escort radiator to fit inside the nose cone, but as smaller radiators such as polo or micra it is not required for structure.

It does help locate the top bone further back. It would be easy to compensate on scratch built bones but you would also need to think about how the nose cone would locate as these are cast with this angle.

In reality though its as easy to weld and cut as any other item so I think you are worrying without reason.

Regards Mark

the compound angles are a pain in the arse. But trust me, every little modification now will have a knock on afect latter. It will make the project longer and in my opinion you will be less likly to get it finished.

Mark each face and cut one face at a time and it will all fit together.

the gts front is even harder still. Pic

I would just take this as the first hurdle of many more to come.

Don't be afraid that you cannot do something, just get into the garage and get started. You'll be amazed what you're capable of.

Angle is easy to cut, you just need to make up the jig first. You can then place tube into it and draw lines in the right place - either vertically or across, and cut.

thanks everybody,
I guess I'll be less worried when I get started!
I did not know the gts chassis version,
what are the pros/cons of this one?
BTW how many "official" chassis versions are available?
I only know the bookchassis, then Mc Sorley's +4 & +442, Chris Gibbs',
others?
