Tidying welds
How do you go about it? Most of mine look ok but there are a few untidy ones.
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

best to grind them flat and re-weld .m.

As long as the weld is ok, why bother? Most of them will never be seen when your car is dressed anyway.

if there out of sight and your confident they are strong you could leave them be.I'm a welder by trade so prob just fussy. m.

They are strong enough. I had to cut a couple of the untidy ones to fit the gearbox. Worked up a good sweat trying to cut them

Plan A is always grind off and re-welds but don't do too often otherwise you can weaken (through thinning) the underlying material.
Here's my plan B for sheddy looking welds:
Skim body filler over the welds, sand them smooth, spray with high build primer, sand, top coat.
The body filler goes into any crevises and generally smooths out the welds.
It also helps make black satin spayed bodywork look more like powder coat by smoothing out the finer detail.

Can't you just sand/grind off the excess? I mean if there's chunks sticking out like a big scab on your leg isn't it just like
excess filler in a dent?

You need to lay your hands on some flap discs.
They leave welds as smooth as a babies

Totally agree, but DON'T buy the cheapies!
I got one from Machine Mart for £7 odd which I thought was a little steep, but I've used it loads of times and it's only just giving up
the ghost.
Bought 2 from Screwfix at £3.50 each and they lasted for about 5 or six welds before they were no better than a cotton wool pad!!
You definitley 'gets what you pays for'
It looks like the Midget is winning at the moment......

Yeah I just meant trim them a bit... Surely a great big lump sticking up isn't going to keep your arse off the road

"You don't get more that you pay for, but you sometimes get less"
In other words, if it's cheap it's probably garbage, if it's dear there's a good chance that it will be good (but it might not
be)

Oooooh loving that flap disc action. Only troube is sometimes it's a bit TOO effective and the bit of metal I'm giving the flap love ends
up being a bit marginal.... 1.5mm thick box section quite easily becomes 0mm

the point i was making was that if your weld consists of big lumps sticking up you've got to ask if it was capable of keeping your arse off the
road or should you grind off and start again.(I'm not having a go at anybodys ability to weld but in 20 years as a welder I've seen welds
fail and you dont want that in a car that is probably going to be driven"enthusiastically" . m.

Even if there's no danger caused by a weld breaking, it'd be such a pain in the arse to sort a half buried weld in a built car, it's
worth getting them right first time.
Summat like inside the tunnel or something. You'd have to strip half the sodding car out to get to it!

Flap discs are used much flatter than you would use a grinding wheel.
A sort of... "not so steep an angle, angle grinder."
