Bolting to Chassis

Hypothetical situation:

If one drills two holes in a straight section of a locost chassis, would the loss in strength be recovered by bolting another section of RHS to it through the holes?

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

I don't quite see what you mean, but welding a tube inside the holes would restore much of the strength, and prevent any crush if you are bolting through

If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

Im really not good at explaining things like this

I want to make a frame to hold my front wings but will need to drill into the chassis to bolt the frame to it. Im just worried about weakening the chassis. I didnt know whether in bolting the frame to the chassis would restore some of the strength lost in drilling the mounting holes.

A better solution would be to weld a bracket to the chassis , and bolt the frame to that .
I NEVER drill through a chassis tube just to bolt something on

Its cuz I is blond , innit

Yes, alway weld brackets to chassis members, never drill.

Depends which tube youre drilling.

If you drill into the flat side of a tube under compression then it wont make a great deal of difference id say. You need to consider the additional forces at accelleration, cornering and braking though, as this compression force might change in different circumstances.

If you were to bush the hole that youve drilled, then thats the proper way of doing it. Drill the hole bigger and weld a bush into it.

Kindest Regards,
Richard.
