What is IRS?

I new to locost building and am hoping to start my first project soon. I have started to read Ron Champs book but then came on here and started reading about IRS. What exactly is it?

Independant Rear Suspension as oppose to live or soild axle.

Im going for the solid rear axle like in the book for the first car
