Space frame mini project.

Hello guys,

I'm about to start my new project. I'm building a space framed mini with a fibreglass shell.

The car will be used for sprints and hill climbs but I'm having some problems trying to decipher the msa regs on
Cage material.

I was planning on using 38mm x 2mm CDS all round but iv read on other people's builds that they have used
45mm x 2mm for the main hoop?

Does anyone know where I stand on this as I'm so lost.

Thanks
Jim

I read it as 45 or 48 mm main hoop and rear stays. seems totally OTT

Mine was built from all 38mm so wont get a blue book.

You would be best to speak to Alan McDonald who has built several space framed Minis including "Bad Wolf".
He is a regular Hillclimb competitor.
He can be contacted on the Uphill Racers or 16V Mini site.

As your car will be in the Sports Libre category, the safety requirements are a bit more stringent.

I believe that your mandatory main roll bar, diagonal and braces should be a minimum of 48.3 x 2.6mm CDS 350N/mm2.

The rest of your "cage" could be reduced in size.
(Technically you do not have a roll cage by MSA definition as you are putting suspension loads into the 'cage' as part of a spaceframe)

If you can persuade the MSA that your car does have a roll cage (rather than a roll bar) then you could use the cage material dimensions from K 1.4.1.
45.2.5 or 50 x 2mm for mandatory members reduced to 38 x2.5 or 40 x 2mm for optional members.

To save any future grief I would be inclined to go for "Sports Racing Car" 48.3 x 2.6mm.
