standard UK round hollow section sizes
As the title says really. I want to get my hands on a couple of meters of 28.5mm ID and 33.7mm OD mild steel tube for suspension bush tubing.
I dont want to sound too stoopid here............................................................................. hey now stop it!
What do i ask for at my local steel stockholders? do i ask for 28.5mm ID and 33.7mm OD or is there some industry or olde worldy obscure description
for this particular size?
And in terms of availabaility V's suitability am i best going for ERW, DOM or any other silly acromyn thingy.........
You may have guessed im not 100% clued up on the old ferrous metal lingo

Dunno on that one, personally I'd just go in, be friendly and explain what I want. I don't mind looking like a novice.

Ah this one I have a better idea on. You want CDS ("cold drawn" . Not ERW which has a seam. dunno what DOM means

Tubing is normaly specified in OD and gauge (i.e. metal thickness).
(33.7-28.5)/2=2.6mm which is 12 gauge metal, give or take 0.1mm.
DOM = Drawn Over Mandrel, effectively it's ERW tube that has been pulled through a madrel to ensure a very accurate and uniform thickness.
It's therefore not seamless.

Whose bushes is it to fit?
Doesn't the bush supplier have any outer tubing. I got some from MK to fit their poly bushes and I'm sure Darren sells it to fit his.

You want one inch nominal bore light steam pipe. It comes in a choice of one inch nominal bore light steam pipe so you can't really go wrong, no
ERW, CDS no nothing. It's a standard size for making all sorts with, and don't worry about it not being CDS because it's that thick
in the wall it just won't matter, especially seeing as it'll only be one inch long.

I'm using the same size as you're looking for, I found some with no trouble, I think it's a fairly common standard size. As
Blueshift says just be nice to your stockholder or do as I did and politely wander around with a vernier in your hand measuring likely tubing.
I'm using seamed tube as I've been told the seam resists the tendancy for the bush to turn in the tube.
Yes bush suppliers will supply the tubes but at over £1:00 each I went for the DIY option, (I have access to a lathe to accuratly machine the tubes).
I think the offcut of tube cost me a couple of quid .

Steel stockholders usually have their own lorries to deliver their wares, I doubt if you will get them to deliver a couple of metres of steam pipe.
. I go to the yard to fetch mine as I need it and I always have a look in the offcuts as they sell these off by weight, so they are cheaper.
