Chassis Protection During Build
Hi guys,
Where I'm working on my project is a barn on the side of a hill, in Wales.
This is very much a recipe for windy and damp, and naturally all my metalwork is rusting up
What would be recommended for protecting the steel stock and chassis while i'm working on it, and while it's stored?
Naturally when it's don't i'll be properly painting it with Epoxy Mastic probably
My thoughts so far are:
Primer -
would take a lot of it, not sure how well it protects against water either.
then sand off the areas to be welded as and when
Oil coat
got lots of old engine oil there
kinda yuck to work with though
clear off with white spirit or similar before welding etc
Or any other ideas?

I use tins of a spray etch primer from Ebay. Seems to do well on stuff in my garage, but it sounds like your place is going to be tougher on metal.
It's worth a go over oily metal, as it needs less cleaning before welding/painting etc. I think the formula has changed on the stuff I use
though, as the latest stuff doesn't weld through quite so cleanly.

primer looks most likely, but not sure how well it protects against moisture? doesn't primer absorb water a little?
Hopefully won't be bad over summer while i'm building, suppose over winter i could give it the final coat, then sand back any parts to be
worked on again. bit poo though
Always clean back to bare metal on welding areas, but the oily stock is a bit unpleasant to handle

Mine isn't quite that exposed, but i am letting the surface go a little rusty. The main reason is because most good primers seem to sit better
on rough metal (por15 being an obvious example). Whenever i weld i give it a good scrub with a wire brush but otherwise just leave it. It does also
give me the encouragement to get the chassis complete before i end up with a car thats more 'barn find' than lotus rep!

ha ha
so what about using cheap top coat?
Not very good with paint stuff, but just regular aerosol paint stuff
should be primed first i suspect
might as well just use Epoxy Mastic in the first place
