V8 Bug

Thinking about a VW Beetle project and building a chassis from scratch. Might use a V8 or may go for something else, either way, it'll be front engine and rwd.

Keep seeing others that have been built using 3" x 2" box which seems a bit ott.

I'm thinking about using 2" box - the body chassis will probably be welded together. Given that toy car was 1" box and had Rover V8 in, I reckon 2" will be just fine.

Thoughts either way please

Thanks

S

I was watching this thread for quite a while but it seems to have disappeared. Wonder if it ever got finished.

Is 3" x 2" box significantly cheaper (or more readily available) than 2" x 2" box - that might be a factor in some peoples decision to use it.

Another thought (unlikely though) does the wall thickness of 3" x 2" box perhaps lend itself better to MIG welding than 2" x 2" box? Both should be available in a variety of wall thicknesses though.

If it's strong enough and right for welding then free's always good and beats paying for more

Tbh 3x2 seems fine to me for a ladder frame and was that for my JBA Falcon with a pinto in it. Classic bugs were dangerous flimsy things, I've restored 2 and I'd not include the shells strength cos it doesn't have any.
