1.6 mk2 escort
hi everyone
I’m building a book Locost from a 1.6 mk2 escort. On page 75 (propshaft) and on page 54 (transmission tunnel) of Ron Champion’s second edition book,
it mention that the 1.6 propshaft is different to the 1.1 and that I would need to modify the tunnel and propshaft to accommodate this. The problem
is that it doesn’t mention what the problem is and what the exact alternatives are. I was wandering if anyone had built a Locost from a 1.6 mk2
escort who can help me out here. Obviously the Locost in the book is designed for a 1.1 mk2 escort donor, is there anything else I need to be aware
that need to change while following the book design using a 1.6 donor. Cheers for any help.

Some people would say you have the best donor there...it certainly is for a pur book build!
IIRC from the book the 1.6 propshaft is a two piece thing...
It doesnt matter anyway as you will need to make/have made a new propshaft anyway...

It will fit OK but be aware that the 1.6 engine is approx 40mm taller overall.
You will have ground clearance problems as you can't really raise engine any higher in engine bay. That's why so many shorten the sump.
Best fit is with oil filler cutoff and rewelded to rear of rocker cover.

Only tack the transmission tunnel into place, then trial mount the back axle as the pinion flange is off centre toward the driver side.

The book is warning against a centre bearing for the propshaft. The 1100 one is much easier to modify as it's a simple cut and shut job. The
1300/1600 one is two cuts and one shut!!
Re ground clearance, I've got 3 inches under my sump (oooh errr), but I've got a front bowl sump off a mk11 Cortina. This puts the bowl
almost between the front wheels so the sump follows the wheels over speed bumps and doesn't crash into them!
