Welding to Axle?

o you have to take the Axle apart before you weld or is it OK to weld to the assembled part?





Started Welding the chassis!!!!

Think this has been covered before....

IIRC its not necessary to completely dismantle, though advisable to drain the oil.

If you want to check the internals for wear you may as well dismantle it and weld while its in pieces....

The trick is to lighten and support the axle properly before welding if you don't it will bend

(1) Pull the shafts
(2) If an english axle remove the dif -carrier if atlas/salsbury don't disturb the final drive
(3) Support axle properly when welding --- support the tubes but not at the ends also support the diff area particularly if the diff is still in place.
(4) Try to weld in short beads in symetrical pattern allowing cooling time between beads.


It may still bend sligthly if it does turn the other side up a try laying a few beads on the opposite side of the axle tube from the original welds.
