Does it have to be ERW?
Does the RHS have to be ERW???

It doesn't HAVE to be, it's just that it's the cheapest option, the most easily purchased, and therefore also what most people
use.
Why?

There is no RHS used..it's not made that thin walled....
Square tube is the stuff, and yes ERW is the right stuff.
Seamless square is hard to find and very expensive....

We call SHS RHS as well over here - just to confuse and even though it's square.

I was meaning RHS generically as in rolled hollow section including squares and rectangles.
RHS or SHS only goes down to 2/2.5 mm
1.6mm wall is definitely square tube..although in terms of manufacturing it's all ERW really.

You got a good supplier then...some will be awkward and be pedantic....like me I guess..
As long as you have your steel that is all that matters....

OK...I'll add to this....Australian companies seem to offer RHS down to 1.6mm...not sure about the UK.....At least when was last there (10 years
ago) 2/2.5 was the bottom limit...
Not that any of this is of any relevence really.....slow day at work...

1.2mm actually
In Australia, RHS refers to Rectangular Hollow Section.
(I'm old and pedantic too).

Got it all now Tom - and under a tenner for a nice shiny 6m length.
What are you after - may have some spare.

nothing in particular, just wondered what suppliers we had in the area.
we usually go to peter hope, in shaw cross/batley but they were getting pretty extortionate not so long ago.

Steel prices have gone up by about 120% in the last 2 years. Now Alloy is starting to follow.

Try Barretts (sp?) in Bradford, massive stock, low prices and when you've paid for what you want and go 'round to the warehouse to pick it
up, it's amazing what odds and ends you can pick up for a fiver. We paid for our square tube, but all the rest of the steel for the build was
"purchased" for a tenner from the blokes on the shop floor

Just ordered all the steel for my chassis (hopefully) and it will cost me £85. Based on the McSorley bill of materials, with allowance for a few mods
I am considering, and some spare if it all goes to plan.
Last post as a senior builder (no. 999)- and as you can tell from what this says, I have yet to start building. Maybe better not post anymore until I
have got somewhere with the chassis
