a large piece of chipboard did it for me, with a spirit level to make sure it stayed true.

I guess you were asking about a flat level table from which to start welding the chassis. I dont know - you ask a civilised question and get all of
the kids makking snide remarks!!!! LOL (i love this site).
Old Kitchen worktop is quite solid / flat. Maybe a couple of lengths on trestles to support a sheet of chipboard. Just brainstorming here to get the
thought juices flowing. Im sure someone will be able to post some pics of there table.
