How should I fix this?

OK, so I lost the back end, mounted a kerb and hit a wall.

The chassis has taken a little damage, the wishbone bracket (lower rear) on the front has moved in, twisting the chassis rail.

Photo's below show the damage, which in my opinion isn't too bad.

I think that I should remove the bracket, attempt to twist it back, plate over the top of the 2 rails and then put another bracket on.

My brother reckons we should cut out the effected rail(s) and replace.

What do you think We should do?

If it were me I'd want to replace the twisted tube, but that's because it would bug me if I just repaired it.

I also notice that someones hand is trapped between your axel stand and the chassis. Just thought I'd say.

Start by taking the engine out -- no matter what way you try and repair it you will need to have the engine out for access and so you can check everything is "square".

While I am pretty sure it can be repaired without replacing the chassis members by careful use of hydraulic ram and localised use of oxy-acetelene heat as chris_R says would you ever be truly happy with it ?

If it were mine I would probably cut the outer tube out and straighten the inner onewith local heat and jacking with clamping it ot to a build board/jig the weld in a new outer tube

i'd cut the outer tube out and replace it, leave the inner tube in situ and weld a bit of 3mm plate over the top. all imho

Ned.

Yes, it was running so sweetly he decided to stack it.

Just... gotta... keep... mouth... shut......

What a lovely compliment!!!

That crap they all broke with the impact???

You should see some of mine - but they've all got plenty of penetration and don't want to separate with a hammer or hacksaw.

Pat...

Is it my eyes or is that inner tube not welded to the crossmember and upright tube?

As said earlier you have to take the engine out.
I would say replace at least the outer tube.
It will cost you close to nothing in material, just a lot of work but you would feel safe.

Cita.

Not a word, but then he was more interested in strength than beauty.
The only "cruddy" weld is a weak one IMHO

My welding isn't the best but after the impact, I'm quite impressed. I was expecting much more damage than what there is.

Cita, that bar is most definately welded

Alex, you see how the tube twisted and the weld didn't break, that's a good weld that is

How to make friends and influence people .
I've seen worse on a lot more expensive cars. Cut the bent rail out from under the fu tube and replace as much of it as you can along with the bracket for the wishbone.

Thanks all for the advise. I think it's time to take it off the road and strip it down for the winter clean up.

A bit OT, but I was justing thinking that the chassis finish is very good for a 'used' car. Is it powder coated? If not, what paint is it?

Also what paint did you use on the 'bones so I can avoid it!

Jon,

If you need a hand for a few hours, I don't mind chopping some tubes and tacking them in place for a pint!

Have you got the all clear from the insurance Jon? I saw Bryn in the week and he didn't know you'd had an off.

Thanks for the offer Pat, although I'm sure we can manage

The chassis is powdercoated (for now) and I can't remember what paint I used for the bones but I didn't prepare them properly anyway, rush job as they were replacements.

I would cut out anything that remotely looks like it's moved and replace it. I'd also check the accuracy of the wishbones and renew/replace as necessary.
As for the "cruddy" welding (and by Christ it is!), it may have held up til now, but your excursion may have been the last straw. I would grind it all out and if you're welding hasn't improved, I'd get someone in who can weld. No offence meant, just being realistic.

Cheers, Rorty.
