Getting started. Locost Virgin
I have been given a copy of the Haynes manual "Building a Sports Car for £250" and I was considering giving it a bash. I have fairly good
knowledge of cars and think it could be done (however I am a bit sceptical of the £250 price tag).
What I wanted to know; for anyone who has this book; was do you have to use a front engined-RWD car for the chassis design that the author uses in the
book?
Would it be possible to use another doner car, or does it have to be a mk1 or mk2 Escort ?
Cos I know Vauxhalls inside and out and I would imagine it would be much easier for me to use a suitable VX doner car.
I have more questions which I will post later, just need to get a few things sorted first.
Any help would be great, thank you.

It is possible to use Vauxhall engines from a front wheel drive in a seven style car, but consideration has to be given for the change in orientation
(sump needs to be baffled etc). The engine is normally mated to a type 9.
With regards to the back end, this is usually sierra, cortina etc but I am sure others may be able to help further on this.

Almost any RWD car system can be used - as long as the engine isn't too tall or too fat.
As for the cost - add another zero to the end of £250 and you'll be in the low end of a typical build cost! It can be done cheaper, but most
builders consider that it's worth spending a bit more cash, considering the amount of man-hours put into the thing.
Have fun!

Friend of mine built an MK Indy using a Red Top Astra engine for his donor engine. He's blue printed it to 280bhp at the wheels. He
doesn't frequent this forum but if you need his details I can get them.

No, anything can be done given enough time and money.
The plans for the chasis that can be modified for whatever engine you want. FWD, 4WD and motor cycle engines have been fitted.
Think carefully about the donor; you may have already have a cheap car but think of what modifications and cost it would need to use the
components.
From my short ownership of a part built kit I'd say go for the newer car, sierra as parts are easier to find for older ones.
