Track to wheelbase ratio

Just out of curiosity really, can anyone tell me how these parameters are come to? I'm not just takling about on a 7 but in general. Obviously it is dependant on the vehicle application.

i remember reading somewhere (possibly staniforth's book) that 1.6:1 wheelbase to track ratio is about where you want to aim for, can't remember why though..

Yes it's in the "Race and Rally Car Source Book".

Brief section and no conclusion about what works best (a real Lotus 7 is 1.6), but 1.62 'looks best' because of the golden ratio thing.

Values normally lie in 1.4-1.7 range. Smaller can mean a lower polar moment of inertia assuming most of the mass is within the wheelbase (which IIRC means it tends to turn better, but is less stable in a straight line) 100cc Karts sit at 1.155.

He mentions experimenting by changing wishbone geometry.

Working from home today so can look up such trivia
