Harness top mount question

I am planning to put 2 threaded inserts through the top chassis rail on my middy, to take 2 harness 'eyes'. The top rail is 50mmx50mm 16g. Do I need to add strengthening plates where the tubes go through?
Thanks and Merry Christmas to all. JC

No, but the gauge of the tube should be similar to the insert gauge and welded top and bottom. SVA manual has diagrams of acceptable and unacceptable solutions. The seatbelt mounts will be assesed visually for strength and also in the SVA manual it shows acceptable mounting areas for seatbelts on a spaceframe chassis. Do a search for SVA manual and download it.

I'd say probably not required.....but I would.

I'd use a 35/40 dia. x 3 thick disc top and bottom of each insert to spread the load.

Before you do anything - make sure that the top mount is going to be high enough for the SVA. On the Locost the top rail is too low - can't speak for your Middy!

It would be very depressing if your solution was too low...

block of wood aprox 3 inches square in the seat them 450mm above that is the reference height for the seat belt mounts or a bar over which the seatbelt goes. If it is just a bar ( as i have welded to my roll bar) then it is considered a structural part of the seatbelt mountings and is assesed for strength. Do check the figures in the SVA manual as i have quoted from an aging memory
