First time builder looking for advice.

Hi folks. I have just joined the forum and looking for some friendly advice. Having been pondering Ron's books both edition 1 &2 I have decided its time to get started. I have ordered the Avon Tiger book to throw more light on the build process. It seems Escort and Cortina stuff is now quite scarce, so I was thinking of mainly sierra parts for the build. While I realize anything (well, most) things are possible, I want to keep the build fairly simple. The simple questions are. Would the book chassis have to be modified to take the pinto or the 1800 cvh engine and gearbox? To take the Sierra diff it will need IRS. Is the norm to build a wider bodied version or have shortened drive shafts? Any advice or pitfalls welcome.
finally on many forums people mention mistakes in the book. What are they? Oh just one more. What are the implications of using the sierra hubs opposed to cortina ones?

Hi, and welcome to the site

The answers to all your questions can be found in the FAQ section of my website (link in signature)

In short, you dont need to to have IRS to use the sierra diff, you can use de dion (see my build pics). The sierra uprights are IMO crap and you are better trying to find a pair of corinta ones, you will be suprised how easy it is to get hold of a set!

No chassis mods for pinto. IMO dont bother with the CVH if you can easily get a pinto. However the sump and rocker cover will need modding on the engine, no problem as they are steel and you can do it yourself.

Why not wait until the end of next month when the new book comes out ?

Wider and uses a sierra donor.

IMO is 'In my opinion'.

The book is not a Ron Champion book, might not have as many errors in this time
