chassis querys

after accidentally deleting the whole thing i best start again
on my chassis im trying to fit my bmw 1.6 engine in which is a probelm because of the awkward angle is sits at and the width of mounting points. Does it make any difference to the way the chassis does it job if i were to "extend" the straight sides up to the trans tunnel before making the chassis narrower. (i hope you know what i mean)
This is just so that there is more room in the engine bay for mounting and also for my feet as the bellhousing is quite wide and would take up most of the room as im trying to get the egine sitting realli far back in the chassis.
if i havent made myself very clear just say and i will make up a quick sketch of what i mean.
Also how much room is needed for pedals?
after trying to mock it up i will be left with around 250 - 300 mm, is this enough?
Thanks guys

Anything is possible, but if you change the chassis as you suggest you'll end up with a very weird looking bonnet/scuttle arrangement and you'd need to rethink the front suspension pickups. You'd be much better off going for a wider chassis with the usual proportions - like the +4" design a few of us are using, or the +2" Haynes Roadster design if that would be enough space.

My advice is to keep things simple. Measure up your engine and draw some pictures of how it fits into a standard chassis. That should give you a good idea of how much extra room you need. Then keep things as standard as you can.

I don't know the BMW lump you're using, but it can't take up much more space than a V8 - and they can be squeezed into a standard chassis.

Also bear in mind that you can offset the engine to one side if you need to - there's no reason the gearbox output has to be right in the middle.

My engine sits at a 45deg angle and the Getrag box that fits it IS wide.

This is the main reason that I made a +4 chassis.
I kept the foot wells book size and added the 4" to the centre of the chassis.
This enabled me to mount the engine/gearbox further back and get the gear lever within reach.
The other benefits were that the Sierra diff and drive shafts then fitted, and my escort rack fitted with no bump steer.

There are downsides though, namely bodywork.

I do like the idea of a BMW doner though, and if I was to build another car this could well be the way I would go.
Possibly shorten those trailing arms, or to save weight, go with double wish bones.
