cutting out a rail in chassis?

Hi guys

Having finally put the engine back in my rebuild, I now find myself in a world of pain trying to fit the exhaust manifold.

The engine is a 1700 Xflow in a pretty much book chassis. I have a westy 4 into 1 the same as this....

Now, where the 4 pipes exit through the side of the car, I have a diagonal bar smack bang in the middle of where the pipes want to sit!! the bar basically goes from the rear wishbone mount on the upper arm to the bottom of the passenger footwell.

As I see it I have 3 choices.

1) ditch the westy manifold and buy a mk2 escort one and reweld it to suit.
(really want to keep the 4 pipe exit heheh)

2) cut the westy manifold so it drops down more
(not sure that it will fit even then and will alter the position of silencer making it too low)

3) Cut part of the offending chassis rail out and weld 2 more going to the top and bottom rails from where I cut. like this ------<
(not even sure thats a good idea although its the one I seem to prefer.)

I really would like to keep the westy manifold as it mates up to the caterham silencer i have perfectly! Can anyone help me here - surely im not the only one who has come across this problem lol

Thanks

I've got the same manifold. I ended up moving my diagonal brace up an inch or two on the side of the chassis. Not ideal but means i can use the manifold as well.

The other option is to do a 'V' brace as you mention.

On my mates Westfield we cut the diagonal before the manifoild tubes and tweeked it up an inch, then welded in two more tubes to make a Y into each distant corner.

So just what you are suggesting, huzaar
