Gear Box Mount
The premade chassis I have has the g/box mounts in the wrong place to suit the 4 speed box I have.
My query is : Can I make up suitable sized plates and BOLT them to the chassis as I can't weld worth a s**t.
Another query is is a Type 9 box longer than the standard 4 speed in relation to the mounting point. I don't want to go down that route as I
bought a new clutch for the 4 speed and I don't have a Type 9 box.

I'd think bolting the mount is fine done correctly, as this is how it is attached to the donor.
Might be wrong tho (as always)

It may be worth getting a type 9 as the gear lever will be in the right place, and you will have the advantage of a 5th gear
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

A lot depends what you mean by standard 4 speed ---
The Sierra 5 speed box is quite a lot bigger than the Escort 4 speed box, but is the same size as the larger of the 2 types Sierra 4 speed box.
The older Cortina/Capri/Early Sierra boxes are roughly the same length as the type 9 but much more compact width wise and have a much neater
bellhousing.
See another thread for drawing by me giving dimensions of the 5 speed.
Clutches I don't know what engine you have.
As for clutches to mate a Sierra 5 speed box to a crosslflow with a 7.5" clutch all you need is a Hillman Avenger driven plate -- the Avenger
pressure has the same part number as the Cortina/Escort.

Simple Chassis Mount for Sierra Type 9
On my car I gave the drivers side section of the tunnel a dog leg to allow the type
9 box to fit while still allowing some room for the driver. The tunnel shown on the sketch
is based on a standard chassis and may need changes to suit.
Don’t scale off the drawing it is just a rough sketch to show the idea, on my car the tail
end of the gearbox fell in line with member B2.
Escort, Cortina/Capri and old MK2 2000e gearboxes have mounts in different positions
from the Type 9.
The mount design involves bolting through a 25x25 rhs --- use tubular spacers on the inside of
tube to prevent it being crushed and use large washer.
