Chassis
Hello,
Got the chance of buying a chassis for a locost part built, what are the pro's and con's of this.
How do I know if the welds are okay? Can I re-weld the parts if not up to spec' or is the risk too much? Mutter! mutter!
It is well priced though!!!!!
Help anyone!!!!

Ned did this- I think it's quite a good idea really... although don't tell him I said so!
The key things to look for are whether the chassis has been customised in any weird ways by the builder (made it bigger, smaller, longer etc) and
check if it's straight.
The customisation *may* not be a problem (in fact it might be a benefit) but you need to know about it so you are aware of the issues with running
gear, bodywork etc. etc.
As far as making sure it's straight: a lot of Locosts tend to 'banana' once they are fully welded. Using a long straight-edge make
sure this is minimal. Also check that the sides are equal length.
Spend a long time doing this as it wouldn't take much for that chassis to be scrap- or atleast more effort to correct than start again!
As far as welds are concerned- generally if it looks like a good weld then it probably is- but I say that with the caveat that it is of course
possible to produce a bad weld that looks good!
A bit of investigation may help- ask the guy (or gal) how long they've been welding or are they certified etc. etc.
If the seller is willing then you could take a file to a couple of welds- that way you can tell if inside they are like an Aero bar!
You can of course grind out bad welds and re-do them.
Hope that helps a bit,
James

Hello,
Cheers for the reply, the guy states he only had the chassis for the escort parts (???).
He states the chassis is of good construction, welds are 'inconsistent' but strong. No alterations to spec' and a lot of extra steel
tube with it.
I think it's worth the chance as it's a fair price.
Thanks
Mark
Unlesss anyone persuades me against this (mutter! mutter!)
Why, I'd horse-whip you if I had a horse.

So he bought a Locost, just to get Escort parts? Strange...
The welding comments throw up a red-flag for me.
You better get a good look at this thing before you buy it...
