Emissions Test for Kit car with Blade engine?

Looking for some guidance please on what the emissions needs to be for a kit car fitted with an 1995 honda fireblade engine.

ive put a cat on it as no it needs that and was thinking of taking down to the local mot garage just to have the emissions checked out.

any guidance would be great.

thanks

I think a 95 blade shouldn't need a cat and falls into the more lenient emissions category.
Check with engine numbers and haynes manual for exact date of manufacture of engine as I think 1995 was the cut off year for cats and tighter emissions, all in IVA manual
My 95 blade engine car with sock filters and standard jets was ok for IVA, but I guess if a friendly mot station will check it for you then can't do any harm.

If engine is pre 1st August 1995, no cat is required. Contact Honda with engine number and they will provide confirmation.

so if pre august 1995 no cat is needed even for an IVA test of a newly built kit car?

If you can provide evidence that the engine is pre1st Aug '95 then it is tested to the earlier limits and does not require a cat to meet those. ie. <3.5% CO and <1200ppm HC at idle.

My car from the Gov tax web site is:

Date of Liability 01 09 2012
Date of First Registration 01 04 1995
Year of Manufacture 1995
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 3239cc
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour GREEN
Vehicle Type Approval Not Available

It was fitted with a CAT when new, does the above mean I can chop this out/ well actually stick in a perforated tube and leave the casing?

No emmisions shown on the V5 either

What does the collective think

Proving age harder than thought. Called Honda but without bike frame number they won't issue a letter of age. All they can confirm Is engine is 1995 :-/

I need to have a chat with MOT Andy and see if his book contains my car, then its Yeah, or nay.

Even without a CAT with EFI it should meet 1200ppm and 3.5 anyway

You only want the age of the engine, not the motorbike. Honda CAN give you the age of the engine from the engine number alone.

thanks but my problem is the engine is 1995, so even if honda confirm it is 1995 they say they cannot confirm what month. so i wont be able to know if it is pre or post august 1995. if it was 1994 or 1996 i wouldnt have the problem.

will find another way of finding out the month ;-)

Honda can confirm the exact day/month/year just from the engine number..... Have you contacted Honda (UK) in Slough?

I googled Honda uk and call main number and they said they needed the vin / frame number. I argued with them saying I have the engine number and surely that is enough but they simply said no. Any ideas what to do? Thanks.

I'd call them again and ask to speak to the customer services manager and hope that you get someone who is willing to help you. They used to provide this service for a fee and I and many others have had letters from them confirming the exact date of the fireblade engines we were using.

Having said that, it was about seven years ago. There used to be a bloke there called Guy Mock, who was extremely helpful. Not sure if he's still there or not

I know a few people have had success from their local Honda dealers, so that may be another avenue to explore.....

Good luck!

Phil
