Calling engineers
Say we have 1metre of mild steel 1" square tube (16gauge) supportes in both ends.
How much weight can we safely place in the middle of the tube?
I just wanted to know for peace of mind!
Thank you!!

You'll need to be more specific. Is it simply supported at both ends or fixed (i.e. can the ends move in any way or are they set in concrete),
how much deflection can you tolerate? Are you wanting to avoid any plastic deformation??
Are we talking about a chassis member or a support for a chassis?

Let's say a chassis member, welded at each end. Thinking of maximun flex without permanent deformation...
Thanks again.

how thick are the walls of the beam, and are you looking for plastic deformation in only one or multiple planes?

A good engineer would not design a structure to put a load acting on the mid-point of a tube!

You trying to find out if your chassis will bend if you sit on the side rails?
It looks like the Midget is winning at the moment......

I agree, unlikely the locost chassis has the engine mountings in the middle of the tubes...
