Single 19mm TR tubes or double 13mm RHS tubes?

A question to the structural analysis boffins.

I work in a crash repair centre and have quite alot of practical knowlege of how steel works in a car but no engineering design experience. I have been looking atthe book chassis qute carefully and the TR tubes dont look right to me. The 19mm tube will be quite strong in tension but will have bugger all in compression.

What happens if you have a smack? I thought that double bracing the appertures that are normally braced with the TR tubes with 13mm RHS would be stronger as the tension strength of the (very small) RHS will be massivley stronger than the comressive strength of the 19mm tube.

Unless anyone has any ideas that affect this, I will probably weld in double braces tomorrow or sunday.

A hundred mind are better than one!

Have you read Cymtriks' posts about having structurally analysed the chassis and therefore how to imporve it?

By the sound of it you can make the whole chassis much stronger but not increase the weight. Follow this link: http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/xmb/viewthread.php?tid=1738

it's quite interesting!

I like this idea, and see no reason why it shouldn't work well, and better than a single 19mm tube
