Dimesional discrepancies in book

As well as building a Hayabusa powered F3 Reynard I have been strangely drawn to this locost business. A review of the book stated that there were dimensional errors in the plans. Is this so or is it just someone getting up their own a**e? If it is true what should I look out for?

Yes - there are quite a few dimensional errors, but nothing to lose sleep about.

The best thing is to download a set of drawings from Mr McSorley - click here

They are drawings in PDF format describing every part of the chassis, with all the dimensions and angles.

Allegedly someone has found a number of errors in these, but I'm not convinced. Anyway, they're 1000 times better than those in the book!

Happy building,

David

The other famous one is the castor error, the dimensions in the book don't give you enough castor. You need a redesigned top wishbone, or other jiggerypokery. Mcsorley's plans don't cover that.. I was thinking about publishing some myself.

I would suggest using the book for guidance in conjunction with this forum. As far as I'm aware the major discrepancies in the book involve the front upper wishbones (castor angle) and the trailing arm forward attachments. Neither of these are covered by the Mc Sorley drawings. I don't wish to detract from the excellent work Jim Mc Sorley has produced, (I use his drawings myself in conjunction with the book and the Avon book) but to highlight the fact that there is no 'one size fits all' solution to building from scratch.

I modified my top wishbones following guidance on this forum (and TOL). The book dimensions give a 14mm trail - I changed this to 22mm, I think. It only means a simple mod to the building jig, and a bit of 'cut-and-fit' for the tubing.

It certainly gives a positive self-centering action from full lock.

IMPORTANT: These dimensions are from memory - seek confirmation before using them!

I modded the L assembly at the front by increasing the lean by 25mm at the top. Still building so not sure of the effects as yet.

A bit of slapstick never hurt anyone.
