firewall side of scuttle

I know the book says to use 16 gauge on the firewall side of the scuttle. I need to use steel as I am welding up the scuttle with some original donor parts (keeping with the title of the donor).
Has anyone who has done a steel scuttle gone with a thinner gauge.
Dale

Thanks
Dale

Mine is 20g, passed SVA, surely all the firewall has to do is keep out the engine fumes, there is no structural element

Mine was Tiger GRP and was completely open above the footwell.

No problems with SVA.
